Hi, Bob here in Kansas and I don't have 5 manufactures and will list only 4 favorite model manufactures are as follows and I'll start with Corgi because it is the nucleus of my collection:

These are the only companies that I have purchase for my collection of aircraft.  When I first started I was purchasing Franklin Mint 1:48 scale WWII models.  But I had a problem with the landing gear and the scale size I was using.  At the scale of 1:48 I determine that the size of the runway would be to large for my basement space.  I sold all my Franklin Mint Aircraft.  I started back at square 1 and decided to collect and use Corgi 1:72nd scale for my diarama of a WWII Airbase in Europe.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for sharing your list with us, you have quite a nice looking line-up!  Something that jumped out at me was the P-51 Mustang being mentioned from 3 different manufacturers.  I think that as collectors, this iconic plane (P-51) is extremely popular with most of us.  A beautifully designed and wonderfully made aircraft that was one of the "best fighters" of WW11, and looks great as a model.  One of my all time favorites...

I agree with what you had to do, in changing your models in your collection from 1:48 scale to 1:72.  As model collectors, we seem to not ever have enough of these scaled-down examples of aviation history around.  I tell my wife it's the manufacturers fault for creating so many wonderful "must have" models, but it doesn't get me "off the hook".  Oh well, can't blame a guy for trying.  Before I began my collections, as nice as the larger models look, I knew going in that the 1:72 scale was the best one for military model planes.  You have a nice compromise between size and great detail in the models.  With that being said, I do however have a handful of 1:32 (Corgi Mustangs), 1:35 (GMP) and 1:48 scale (HobbyMaster) that I had to have.  But most of my military aircrafts are in the 1:72 scale.

I think it's great that you have enough room in your house (basement) to build a WWII base diorama, what a nice way to display some of your models.  I've lobbied for a bigger house to be able to display all of my collection with no luck so far.  Thanks again for not only sharing your list but adding a brief story and giving us some insight about your thoughts, take care...

Your wife and my wife need to meet and compare notes.  My wife is always asking me if I have enough planes in my collection and when are you going to stop buying models airplane?  She just doesn't understand what draws the likes of us that collect model aircraft.  Hanger56 if you have the time look at "My Page".  I started my collection of Corgi WWII aircraft of the ETO and MTO late 2008 or early 2009.  I have just finish this collection today (2/22) when the mailman delivered the Corgi B-17 Nine-O-Nine.  I have 2 models for every one of the Corgi WWII aircraft except for the larger aircraft such as the bombers example Lancaster's, B-17's and He-111 transports Ju-52, DC-3 and C-47 Dakota. 

 

I'm thinking of ending the collection of Corgi Models except for a few new aircraft that will be produced like the "Short Stirling", Blenhiem, Me/Bf 110, Doenier 17 and 215, Defiant and there are so many models, such like the Mosquito, P-38 Lightning, Typhoon, most of the Navy aircraft and Japanese aircraft that need to be produced.  I may anger some people but Corgi has almost 50 Spitfires which are all the same except for the paint scheme.  I like the Spitfire but Corgi is going to produce 3 Spitfires that will all be the same except for 1 call letters along the sides.  I would like to see a Seafire or something different than the Spitfire, what about another Typhoon, how about some Russian or Japanese aircraft.  Not the same old, same old Spitfire.  The Spitfire is one of my all time favorite fighter aircraft.  What say you Hanger56 and the rest of our group that read this comment?

Hi Bob,

My wife is very understanding when it comes to my die-cast model plane collection, makes me an extremely happy man!  She came into the room the other day and made this statement; "I see you got a couple more green and gray airplanes" and then she was fine with that.  She has always known and understood that my models are NOT toys, but collectable model planes.  I guess the part that they (wifes) may never completely understand is our passion and love for aviation and collecting these wonderful scaled-down pieces of history.

Nice job picking up the Corgi B-17 "Nine-O-Nine", I have that one in my collection.  My favorite Corgi B-17 that I have is the "Memphis Belle".  I get where you are, there are so many models to choose from and those that we want to add to our collections.  I've wrestled with this dilemma for some time myself and came up with the realization that I won't be able to purchase every one.  So it's a matter of setting priorities and getting the ones you really can't be without and at the same time getting the most "bang for your buck", as they say!  I purchase models to collect and enjoy, not to sell or trade if I were to get tired of them.  I guess you could say I'm like a "Museum Curator," my die-cast models are with me for the long haul and then some!

Hopefully this little tid-bit of advice can help.  I once read that the "best die-cast models to collect" are the ones you love, you just can't love them all... Ha!
