I was in a hobby shop and came across an old Monogram P-51D Mustang kit from '85.  I remembered that I built the same kit as a kid but with no patience (horrible paint job and and glue marks all over).  I want to do one proper this time around for my parents.  My paternal grandfather flew a P-51D in the Asian theater and my maternal grandfather marched up Italy with the 10th Mountain Division.

I want to give this model a proper paint job and add custom 10th Mountain decals.  I am looking  for advice on how to do the paint well with brushes (I'd rather not shell out for an air brush), the proper colors for an Asian theater P-51D, how to go about custom 10th Mountain decals, and opinions on an appropriate place to place the decals (nose, wings, tail, etc).

So far I've given the kit a dunk in a  mild soap bath and it is now drying.

Any input will be much appreciated.

What scale is it? and have you looked at decals that are available on the internet? There may be a set that matches the scale for the plane you want to build. Also, I can't recommend the use of an airbrush enough, and failing that, try and use spray paint instead, it gives a much much smoother finish!
