Hello friends it's Bob from Kansas.  I would like to talk about Corgi and it's cataloges and the models within these cataloges.  I collect Corgi 1:72nd scale diecast models in the Aviation Archives and have in the collection all the models from late 1999 to the present.  I collected the large bombers and the small fighter and I also have several other models such as WWI, 1st and 2nd generation jets produced by Corgi.  This gives you a little info about myself or if you want more go to "My Page" to find more.

Now comes my problem with Corgi and it's fighters models and I may step on some people's toes and upset people with what I'm about what to say.  I hope you can join in and speak freely about what I'm seeing as a problem with Corgi models and if you agree.  I'm seeing way to many Spitfires in my collection with over 50 in my collection.  The next fighter model that has most fighters is the P-51 Mustang with about 38 models. Now these 2 models are my top 2 aircraft that I would want if I could have one out where I could fly one and call it my own.  Next best thing is to have a few models.

All I see coming from Corgi are Spitfires and the last time we saw an American model produced by Corgi January March of 2010.  It was a Heavy and it was a B-17 called "Hell's Angels" and it was a very nice model to have or add to a collection.  I went back as far as July/December 2009 and still did not find on United States fighter to add to my collection.  I can go back and ask when was the last time you saw a Japanese, Russian, italian or a French aircraft model from Corgi??????????

I am getting tired of just seeing Spitfires to collect and add to my collection.  I've looked at the following Corgi Cataloges from July/Dec 2009 (2), Jan/Mar 2011 (1), Apr/Sept 2010 (2), Oct/Mar 2011 (2), Apr/Sept 2011(3) and Oct/Mar 2012 (1) and I've total the # of Spitfires to all the other fighter aircraft from the allies and the Spits were the top with a total of 11 to 0 in favor of the Spitfires.  I went thru 6 cataloges from summer of 2009 to the last catalog I received the other day for Oct 2011 to Mar 2012 and found not other fighter aircraft from those that countries that fought in WWII.

I would like to see Corgi start producing other fighters aircraft from those other countries that were part of WWII.  It would be nice to see aircraft like the P-39 Air Cobra, some of the Russian aircraft, Italian aircraft and would like to see some of the aircraft that they produced in the past to come back like the P-38 and the P-47.  I would like to hear from others and maybe think of some ways to light a fire under Corgi to produce other aircraft.  What say You??????

Right on Bob! I am glad to see some of these discussions and topics coming up!

Hi, Bob!

I agree with you about Corgi's choices regarding their WWII Archive series. There are indeed a lot of UK Spitfires, Typhoons, and few US fighters. They're more productive with bombers, as we can find US, German and UK items. But no Russian nor Japanese or Italians series. One A6M2 perhaps and that's all. It would be interesting they enlarge their politics !!!

As I can speak of WW1 Corgi's Aviation Archive series, I have to say that I was very disappointed by the Von Richthofen Albatross DV I bought it twice, for the first had non parallel wings, but the second had upper wing broken hanging only from some riggings !!!. In fact, the black plastic box which maintains the model in place is too tightened, and I guess that someone tried to pick up the model from the box without any precaution and breaks the model like a bulldozer !!!. TRhe riggings are a big problem for the biplane models as they are often not straight.

But generally, other the models are quite accurate, with some markings bugs though.

Thanks for this discussion, Bob!

Kind regards from France!

Hi Bob,

I would have to agree with you that there are too many UK type aircraft, and even too many WWII for my liking. I am a collector of mostly US and Russian 1/72 Cold War-present day military aircraft, and Corgi has very little to offer for me. More than anything though, I have a problem with the their quality and price. I have found that Hobby Master gives me a much better value and produces higher quality items with parts that actually fit. When I have a choice, I will try and avoid Corgi and choose Hobby Master instead.

Just my humble opinion...

I find corgi one of the best diecast manufacturer. I have some of them in my collection and my favorites are the B-17s,B-24 P-40, P-38. Was just lucky to get hold of the first issue of the Memphis Belle a few months ago and treasure it a lot, knowing its rarity nowadays. The slight problem with corgi though are the heavy panel lines but it doesnt bother me that much. I hope they would make more Heavies like the B-24 and B-25 in the future

Hello Mario,

I do like Corgi a lot also but I purchase other models from other aircraft makers, such as Hobby Master, IXO, SkyMax, Century Wing and Gemini Jets.  I like these model makers for some of their aircraft because they have models the Corgi doesn't produce for whatever the reason.  If you look thru Corgi models you see places that are not there for me to purchase, such as Russian, French, Italian etc. models.  I do have every WWII aircraft produced by Corgi.  I also have a 2nd Corgi model for each model aircraft I have in my collection except for the larger Aircraft produced by Corgi, such as the bombers and transports.  I will try and purchase a 2nd Corgi Aircraft for these larger models.

I think that you and I would get along just fine because of our taste in models and I bet that there are others out there just like the 2 of us.  I do like of the models you have mention in your email, but my first choice is the P-51 Mustang and the Lancaster would have to be my pick of those the Heavies.  The reason for this is because they could carry a larger amount of bombs and would also say that it could carry that big bomb call the "Tall-Boy".  It also was changed to carry the Bouncing Bomb that did a number on some of the Dams in the Rhur Valley of Germany.

I think my favorite Bomber is the B-17 called "NINE-0-NINE" Corgi #US33309 and comes with 10 Crew members.  This model took me a long time to find and it was expensive because it value over time.  It was hard to find anyone that was willing to sell it and if you found a collector willing to sell his it was going to cost a lot of dollars.  It's a beautiful models to see and I think much nicer that the Memphis Belle.  I have both issues of the Memphis Belle and their very nice with paint scheme.  If you find the B-17 "Nine-0-Nine for sale and it's all there you should buy it for your collection!

Cheers, Bob

Hello Mario,

If you like the Heavies I think that you would like the British Stirling.  At my hobby store where I purchase most of the newer Corgi models I was the first one to place an order for 2 but I was limited to just one.  If I had been on the ball I should have found another dealer and purchase the 2nd.  It's one of the best new model that's been produced by Corgi in a long time.  I've got my name in for the next Stirling that is planned by Corgi and this time I will get my name in for a 2nd.

The first Stirling was to have only 1500 hundred models produced but Corgi decided added another 500 to make the production limit 2000 because there was such a big of the demand for this model.  If you have a hobby store where you purchase your models from I would suggest you try and purchase a Corgi Stirling for your collection.  If you have a chance to purchase the very first Corgi Stirling and the price is high but still at a level that you feel is within your range I would tell you to "BUY IT"...........I think the price of these Stirling will only go up and this is a good time to buy them.

If there is anything that you need or need some help please feel free to email and I will do my best to help you.  If you would like to write me with a question let me know and I will send you my address.  Keep cool my friend and have a great day.

Cheers, Bob
